If you did not know, Chris Farley’s Matt Foley character that gained world-wide fame on SNL was originally created and performed back at Second City in Chicago. What is also unknown to the general public is that SNL Alum Bob Odenkirk, who is most well-known for playing Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, and Farley created the character together. In its original run on stage at Second City it was a very popular sketch, but never before has video footage of the original version been seen….UNTIL NOW! This sketch is easily one of the most influential in my own comedy career. Chris made me want to be fat. Fat people are always funnier, at least that is what 9 year old Dom thought at the time. Just so you know, I’m still skinny and I don’t think fat injections could change that. I have a metabolism that is faster than a cheetah. Anyways- Check out the original video and then the SNL version. It is a great way to see what elements of the sketch stayed the same and what changed. Definitely take note of Chris’ growth as far as his physical comedy. He really takes the sketch to new heights by the time it made it on air at SNL.
